WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS?

Endometriosis is a disorder that occurs when the endometrium, the tissue which lines the uterus, starts to grow outside of the uterus in places like ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, or intestines.

This misplaced tissue is often fueled by estrogen and present as lesions or implants. When these lesions bleed, they cause severe pain and inflammation. Endometrial lesions can also grow around nerves, causing pelvic pain. These lesions can also form scar tissue between organs furthering the pain.

WHY IS ENDOMETRIOSIS SO DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE?

  • on average, proper diagnosis can take up to 6 to 10 years

  • often symptoms are dismissed as "just bad periods"

  • you may have symptoms from other diseases
